Grade 5 Fraction Paper Strip Model Visualization

2019-03-27 17:43
This GeoGebra example is designed for Grade 5 fraction instruction, using paper strip models (tape diagrams) to visually demonstrate fraction concepts and operations. It employs Polygon and Sequence commands to draw equally divided strips, combined with FractionText command to dynamically display fraction values, helping students understand fraction composition, comparison, and addition and subtraction of fractions. The example includes built-in greatest common divisor (gcd) calculation logic that automatically demonstrates the steps for simplifying fractions to their lowest terms. Users can interactively adjust the number of strips and fraction parameters through sliders, enabling exploratory and inquiry-based learning. This applet is well suited for classroom demonstrations by teachers as well as for independent student practice, allowing learners to manipulate visual representations and observe how fractional relationships change in real time. By connecting concrete visual models with symbolic notation, the applet supports the development of deep conceptual understanding rather than rote procedural memorization.
